History & Club Information

The Club was founded in 1894 on land purchased from the Marquis of Cholmondeley. The Clubhouse and boathouses are situated on Cholmondeley Road, Clifton, Runcorn, WA7 4XT adjacent to Rocksavage Power Station. Rowing is on the River Weaver Navigation, the best stretch of rowing water in the North-West. The Club is affiliated to British Rowing (the sport’s governing body) and operates under British Rowing rules. The Club has a number of boats from singles to eights to suit all ages and weights.

The women's and men's squads constitute most of our membership (the younger of both also being part of the "senior" squad), with the remaining members consisting of the juniors, yearning-to-row and adaptive squads.

A small number of dedicated rowers have expanded the club in the past five years. About 30 senior members are active as coaches, committee members or helpers. Water based training sessions are held on Saturday and Sunday mornings all year. On lighter nights: Tuesdays and Thursdays Novices and new joiners Sunday mornings only. Adults on Wednesday evenings.

The Jim Newcomb boathouse is the most recent addition to Runcorn Rowing Club. The boathouse stores the larger boats such as the coxed eights and the coaching launches.

Derek Twigg, MP for Halton, officially opened Runcorn Rowing Club's new boathouse on Friday 18th April 2008.

Weaver Valley Canoe Trail Pontoon

On Sunday 5 September 2010 the Weaver Valley Canoe Trail Pontoon at Runcorn was officially opened. The pontoon is located to the left of the Jim Newcomb boathouse and was officially opened by Janet Ward of Ineos Chlor, Dave Hennessey of British Waterways and Ann Bates of Action Weaver Valley.

The Clubhouse & Boatsheds

Along with the RRC clubhouse, we have two boatsheds, the original boatshed which is home to the club singles and the second boatshed which is split in half. One side is used by Liverpool University Boat Club & the other half is the private boat shed.  The clubhouse has basic changing, shower and toilet facilities plus a dry exercise area with 8 indoor rowing machines, a leg press and weight training equipment. The famous Runcorn bacon butties are available on Sunday mornings.
