Runcorn Coaching Policy
The coaches' overall objective is to assist all
members to participate in rowing and to enjoy the sport for the
many benefits it provides. The level of training undertaken by
any member will vary with their objectives and their degree of
commitment. Coaches will advise members on the level and type of
training required in order to meet the objectives of members. Entries
are made for competitions taking into account the objectives of
the club, the objectives of members, and the availability of members and
their potential in relation to the standard of the competition.
Potential is assessed according to the advice received from coaches.
Entries may also depend on boat availability and trailer capacity.
The Club Captain, deputised by the Chief Coach, will be responsible
for the final choice of members for any competition.’

Senior Coaching and Competition
Plan
Senior
training programme winter 2007
This plan describes how the overall
approach will be implemented for RRC Seniors.
Coaching The seniors
Captain will, overall, coordinate the provision of coaching and
associated resources for seniors. Coaches will endeavour to coach
crews according to plans which take into account the objectives
of the crews.
Requirements fall into three categories:
• Beginners (those with no previous
experience)
• Intermediates (everyone who is
not a beginner or advanced)
• Advanced (those who have advanced
coaching needs which cannot easily be met with RRC resources)
Beginners By prior
arrangement with the seniors Captain, Beginners will be offered
1 to 1 coaching during session 1 or 2 on Sunday mornings only.
The aim will be to cover the basics of safety and rowing technique
so that Beginners may progress to rowing in crew boats as soon
as possible. From then on, they will be considered to be Intermediates.
Intermediates The
coaching offered to Intermediates will normally be crew based.
An intermediate who would like to receive regular and structured
coaching should try to form a crew with other like-minded seniors
[e.g. this could be a 1x or a crew of 5 or 6 to form a 4x, 4x+
or 4+]. Crews should consider how often they can row together,
mutual compatibility and the availability of resources. Crews should
apply for coaching to the seniors Captain. If the demand for crew-based
coaching outstrips the availability of coaches and other resources,
it may be necessary either to ration or to split coaching sessions
between several crews or to form squads and to provide the coaching
on a squad basis. Intermediates may also apply to coaches for coaching
sessions on an ad hoc basis. The crew in this case could be ad
hoc (e.g. ‘social’ rowers). This is subject to the willingness
and availability of coaches and other resources. Subject to the
agreement of the Junior coaches, senior crews may also participate
in the Junior coaching sessions on Saturday mornings. Coaching
will also be offered on a squad basis to Intermediates who wish
to develop their singles skills on one evening per week during
a defined summer period.
Advanced ‘Master
classes’ will be arranged on an ad hoc basis for advanced senior
crews, using appropriate resources which may be externally provided,
depending on demand. It may be necessary for seniors to pay a fee
for this.
Competitions Senior
crews that wish to participate in a competition should apply through
the Club Captain to the RRC competitions coordinator at least 3
weeks prior to the competition. Crew members must be ARA members
and must supply their ARA membership number and dob to the RRC
competitions coordinator. Race and trailer fees must be paid to
the RRC assistant treasurer in parallel with the competition application.
Entries will be forfeit if fees are unpaid by the 3 week deadline.
